Introducing the first of its kind, a video game based on a record! And what a record! 'Outrun' is one of those albums i would choose to be in the compilation of albums that would form the soundtrack of my life... if that was a thing.
I'll admit i knew about this release from the day it was ready to download (July 8th) and waaay before then even... but i've been busy, (finishing Uni ya know) and lazy, (recovering from finishing Uni ya know) but i've finally caught up!
To my surprise (shamefully so) i suddenly got hit by that "OHMAGAHHHD!! WHATISTHATMUUSIC??" feeling. I rediscovered the delightful synthy house sounds that make me wish i had an air of enigma about me paired with dark shades and a bomber jacket to go with my cool and moody look. I was hooked on certain tracks since Drive was released last year and although this fits well in terms of the official album release, i can't help but feel it could have come a little sooner.
It is essentially what it looks like. Grand Theft Auto style inspired, hit the baddies until they die, drive the cool red car, (i haven't reached the part where the prostitutes make an appearance yet... ?) game app.
I love it because of all these things. I'm a 90's kid and growing up with three video game enthused brothers, i guess i'm lucky that i have a nostalgic love for these kind of, linear designed, addictive, search and destroy and don't care how the score is calculated, game concepts. Spyro was another.. but i'm a girl so it's ok.
The game is the lovechild derived from the success and ultra coolness built up surrounding Outrun's release and essentially it plays a unique and never before seen part to the usual promotion processes an album sees itself go through.
I imagine the game is largely aimed at my age range (as well as the obvious die hard fans) who share the same GTA and Tekkan memories that i do. The first level broke the user in nicely, search the urban street littered with wooden crates and dark alley ways, fight the thugs with high kicks and right hooks until they fall to the ground and flash into nothingness. On your way down the road you're attracted to shiny flashy objects that i suppose do something to your stats but i wasn't paying much attention as i was more interested in the interesting noises they made when you pocketed them.
Finally you reach the end of the road and, pleasantly reminiscent of my Sonic memories, you're faced with a big baddie, in which case if you can use a nifty way of unleashing a can of whoop ass on his umm.. ass.
That, fairly basic level alone makes me want to play more levels, not sure whether its because Visionaries 777 tapped into my childhood memories or because its Kavinsky. And anything associated with Kavinsky is cool. Especially when Kavinsky brings out a freaking video game!
When i got to level two... the geek inside me started doing back flips at the revelation that this game uses augmented reality! With the users choice of background you can cruise through downtown L.A, completing bonus levels whilst listening to some well chosen Outrun tracks. Alternatively, download the album.. i mean, they made a game based on it.. you know it's worth it.
Download that shit, make sure your phone is off silent and savour the experience.
